Small, but vital: HDI Assicurazioni launches a project to protect bees, to contribute to the preservation and biodiversity of the Planet
Today, more than ever before, bees worldwide are threatened with extinction by humans. These tiny pollinating insects, however, are not only the highly valued producers of honey but are also the foundation of the chain – and guardians – of biodiversity.
It was, in fact, Albert Einstein who said that "If the bee disappeared off the face of the Earth, man would only have four years left to live." This statement gives us a dramatic and urgent sense of their preservation, given that without bees, 70% of living plant species, which in turn provide 35% of global food production, are at risk. Biodiversity itself could be compromised forever without them.
Not to mention the contribution of these industrious insects to the economy. In fact, bees and the beekeeping economy represent a turnover of approximately 153 billion euros per year worldwide.
These are numbers that force us to pay attention. This is why HDI Assicurazioni, as part of its commitment to sustainability, has decided to set up beekeeping projects in collaboration with PlanBee, the first Italian platform dedicated to environmental and social projects.
With PlanBee, HDI decided to adopt some beehives and a melliferous garden at an urban apiary in Rome, located in the Tre Fontane district, in the southern quadrant of the capital, where the company's headquarters operate. Bees are particularly at risk in urban areas because of humans. HDI has decided to support spaces dedicated to their reproduction and care, such as apiaries, and contribute to their activity by promoting the planting in an area adjacent to that of the hives of different varieties of melliferous plants that can recreate an ideal habitat for these vitally important pollinating insects.
But everyone can make a difference! In fact, HDI Assicurazioni has recently obtained ESG recognition for its "Progetto Investimento Flex" ("Flex Investment Project") investment product, which has been certified as sustainable. And to celebrate this important milestone and give all its policyholders the chance to support beekeeping, until 31 December 2022, HDI has decided to allocate €2 for every new "Flex Investment Project" policy sold to PlanBee's projects for bees and biodiversity.
A way to preserve our planet's biodiversity and a small contribution to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 2 to help "End hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture".
